A £2,500 communion chalice was stolen from St Etheldreda's Church, Church Lane, Horley, OX15 6BJ, between the 8th September & 6th October 2013. The chalice was stored in the safe in the vestry which is always locked.
The safe was not forced so the possibility is that it was insecure or the thief had a key.
The main church door is open during daylight hours. The chalice is described as a good specimen of the rude vessels common during the latter end of the 17th century, bearing the hallmark of 1690 with makers mark 'E. G'. The plain bowl rests on a trumpet shaped stem each having a small round moulding for knop.
Height 7. &1/4 inches.
Diameter of bowl 4 & 1/4 inches, depth of bowl 3 & 7/8ths inches.
