Theo the Tower Wizard will be among those ringing the bells at Hambleden church to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday.
Ten-year-old Theo has been ringing the bells at Hambleden for the past three years, joining his brother Sam and father Jon. He also rings at Marlow.
He loved his time bell ringing so much he wanted to get involved in running the Tower, supporting the captains at both Hambleden and Marlow. Following a discussion with the captains, they agreed some responsibilities which Theo could take on, like writing articles for the newsletter, parish magazines and press as well as keeping a record of attendance.
Now he had an official role, he needed an official title and at an AGM it was decided Theo was the first Tower Wizard.
Theo said: “Being a Tower Wizard is fun, and I think every tower should have one. We’re really useful! For example, I always make sure the sweet tin in the tower is fully stocked. After all, what’s the point of ringing if you can’t reward yourself with a treat? (Everyone knows children run on sugar and the promise of ‘just one more’ sweet!)
“I love having this responsibility because it makes ringing even more exciting. It’s a great way for young people to get involved and enjoy it even more. Besides, if I ever get tired of ringing, I can just remind people that children love making loud noises – so really, we were born to be bellringers!”
