Philippa to become Bishop's Chaplain

The Revd Philippa White has been appointed as the next Bishop's Chaplain for Bishop Steven.

Philippa is currently the Precentor at Christ Church Cathedral and is one of the longest-serving members of the Cathedral team, having joined as Succentor in 2018.

Bishop Steven said: "Philippa will bring many gifts and skills to her new role and is already well known to many in the diocese through her ministry in the Cathedral. We look forward very much to welcoming her as Bishop’s Chaplain in September and to working with her into the future."

The Very Revd Professor Sarah Foot, Dean of Christ Church, said: “Philippa has made a tremendous contribution to the life and ministry of the Cathedral while serving for almost seven years as our Succentor and Precentor.

“On top of her regular liturgical and musical responsibilities she led our response to the considerable liturgical challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic with imagination and pragmatism, ensuring the continuity of our daily worship.

“A vital area of her work has been to connect the worship of the Cathedral with the fabric of civil society through engagement with a wide and growing range of stakeholders: in the Diocese, the City and beyond.

“She has also been an important source of pastoral support to many in our community, especially in her roles as Chaplain of Christ Church Cathedral School and, latterly, Associate Safeguarding Officer. We are enormously grateful for her ministry here, and she goes to her new role with our prayers and best wishes."

In her new role, Philippa will assist Bishop Steven in his ministry and leadership of one of the largest dioceses in the Church of England. Philippa’s last service at Christ Church will be 20 July.

The Revd Paul Cowan, who has served as Bishop’s Chaplain for eight years, takes up a new role as Associate Archdeacon for Berkshire in September.
