World Aids Day
27 November 2009
St Nicolas’ Church Earley is throwing open its doors on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd December to mark World AIDS Day.
The people at St Nicolas’ Church want to highlight the plight of the 33 million people who are living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. The number of people living with HIV in the UK has trebled in the last 10 years to more than 80,000 people. Vicar, the Revd Neil Warwick, said: “Somewhere in the world three people die every minute because of AIDS. These are not just statistics but people like us, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. We believe there is hope for all people living with HIV and AIDS and we are passionate about raising awareness of this ongoing tragedy. We want this day to be an expression of solidarity and hope.”
People are invited to give a few minutes to enter St Nicolas’ Church to see the interactive displays about HIV and AIDS and read the real life stories of people who are living with the virus.
A special event at 7.30pm on Tuesday 1st December will highlight the personal stories behind the statistics with film, music and personal testimony.
On Thursday 3rd December Year 6 children from local schools will go to see the displays and learn more about the 15 million orphans who have lost their parents to the virus.
