VOLUNTEERS from St Lawrence's Church in Hungerford and the town's community joined forces to improve the towpath along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Vicar of St Lawrence's, the Revd Mike Saunders spearheaded the project, which saw 19 people from the church and 14 others from the community work hard to sweep out potholes and work on providing a 'finished' surface.

Materials were provided by the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust for the work on the towpath between the High Street and St Lawrence's. Mike and his wife Alison are both waterways chaplains.

"We walk along the canal for an hour every week and we decided we could get a team together to help improve the surface, so we approached the trust.

"Basically, they give us two types of material, scalpings and dust.

We put them down to create a new surface with a camber and put it down with a whacker. "The sun shone throughout the day, which ended with a community lunch.
