Becoming an Effective Governor

Ofsted’s current 14 criteria for governance raise significant new and refined challenges. That number increased from 9 to 14, and the next framework (in development now) is not expected to, in any way, reduce the relentless focus on governance.

New aspects include reference to the agenda which has become known as ‘British values’; an explicit requirement for a very active transparency towards stakeholders; an expectation that governors do not confine their influence to within the school grounds; and an expectation that Governors regularly review whether they are in fact hindering the school’s progress by their lack of expertise and knowledge. The Governors Handbook (January 2015) identifies that ‘High quality induction and continuing professional development is vital to equip governors with the skills they need…’

Becoming an Effective Governor examines the key roles and responsibilities for Governors within a Church School setting. Using presentation and discussion it provides:

  • Opportunities for Governors to explore their understanding.
  • The balance of support and challenge required for senior leaders.
  • The key questions to ask.
  • What, using national research, effective governance looks like in our schools today.

This module is a priority for all recently appointed governors and to enable all Governors to remain up to date with the current educational landscape.

The Role of the Clerk

The role of the clerk, supporting within a governing body, has never been more essential.

National guidelines and associations identify how a highly skilled clerk can be key to enabling a governing body to be effective in raising standards and enabling school improvement.

This module will look at the key skills, knowledge and competencies needed to be an effective and informed clerk.

This training is suitable for both new and experienced clerks

Good to Outstanding Governance

This module is aimed at governing bodies of schools who are aiming to become outstanding. It is an interactive session that will enable governors to understand how inspectors judge outstanding governance and what this means in practice.

It looks at the features of outstanding governing bodies, including the criteria that have been highlighted in recent governance reports under the latest inspection frameworks. It involves work on the descriptors for outstanding leadership and management, the latest publications on governance, suggestions for high quality monitoring and reporting arrangements and an opportunity to assess your governing body against both the criteria to enable your governing body to become outstanding.

The module will focus on:

  • An overview of the current Ofsted Framework
  • An awareness of the implications for Governors.
  • Knowing what outstanding Governing Bodies are organised and work.
  • Knowing what is expected of Governors’ monitoring and evaluation routines.
  • A chance to discuss, ask questions and consider the evidence needed with our experienced school inspectors and advisers

This course is suitable for governors, senior leaders and Head Teachers of primary and secondary schools.
