FLANDERS field is a festival of remembrance set to take place in Tilehurst in Berkshire, next month.
The event is inspired by the family of Major George Beaumont-Tyser who donated the pipe organ in his memory after he fell at the Battle of the Somme.
The Parish of St Mary Magdalen will be commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the ending of World War One with a weekend festival of events between the 20 and 22 July.
The nine-foot poppy cross will be used as the central feature.
Supported by the Tilehurst Branch of the Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes, a nine-foot poppy cross will take centre stage and be surrounded by flowers and displays remember key battles from the four-year conflict. The church will be covered with poppies, flowers and displays featuring poems from The Front.
An 'Immortal Army' memorial wall will feature photos of those who died in the conflict. The event will kick off with an organ recital on Friday.
A festival Eucharist will take place on Sunday at 10am with the Ven.
Olivia Graham, the Archdeacon of Berkshire, preaching.
The event will close on Sunday afternoon with a Choral Evensong with the support of the Tilehurst British Legion. Carl Feltham, one of the event organisers, said: "We have sadly lost contact with the family of Mj George Beaumont-Tyser, originally from the Mortimer area and be would very much like them to contact us if they are still in the area. "Images or photos of relatives that fought during the campaign can be sent to carl. feltham@virginmedia. com for inclusion in an Immortal Army mural.
