Prayers for the week to use at home or school …

The warmth of the sun’s embrace
the gentle breeze swept in by incoming tide
the rhythm of seasons
of new birth
death and recreation
All these speak so clearly of your love
your power
and your beauty
All are expressions of your creativity
and more importantly of yourself
As an artist might share his personality
within each brushstroke
so within the myriad colours of a butterfly’s wing
you share the exuberance of your love

That we can glimpse you within creation
is a beautiful thought
but also tells us that you desire to be seen
to be found and known
Open our eyes, Lord
as we walk through this world
feel the wind and sunshine
see the majesty of creation unfolding before our eyes
Help us to see you

Lord of the seasons.

Help us to see you all year round;
in the wind
in the rain
in the sun
in the snow
in the mist

and keep us thankful
whatever the weather.

The pastures are green; the trees bear their fruit, and there are plenty of figs and grapes.
Joel 2: 22

From previous weeks:

Lord of the life around us,
The year has turned, and the rhythms of the world are beginning to change.
In our northern places the birds rise and fly,
The crops ripen,
The Summer blooms full around us.
As these signs of hope flourish, we recall you Lord, who made the breeze, the rain and the growth,
grant us your hope in the months to come.
For children and families –
Summer rest and Autumn return.
For teachers and governors –
Summer rest and Autumn return.
For all who have suffered and are suffering –
Summer rest and Autumn return.

In your love and care –
Summer rest and Autumn return

and all days
embrace us in a love that knows no end.
and all days
fill us with a power that overcomes.
and all days
encourage us with a word that nourishes.
and all days
inspire us with a hope that sustains.
and all days
comfort us with a peace that endures.
and all days
bring wholeness of body, mind and spirit
and all days

Dear Lord,

May there be peace within us today
May we trust God that we are exactly where we are meant to be.
May we not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May we use the gifts that we have received, and pass on the love that has been given to us.
May we be content, knowing that we are children of God
and comfort us, we pray, in this time of sickness, stress and sadness.
Let the presence of the Spirit settle into our bones, and allow our souls the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
For it is there for each and every one of us.

After St Theresa 1515-82

Lord God,

Grant us patience in all that we think and do so that we will truly know that with you we lack nothing and that with you beside us we do not need to be disturbed or afraid.

Help us to remember that it is through our hands, our eyes and our feet that your compassion, your good and your blessing are shared in the world. We pray that you will give us strength and wisdom to us our gifts for the benefit of everyone.

The will of God be done by us;

The law of God be kept by us;

Our tongue in cheek be held by us;

Repentance timely made by us;

Christ’s passion understood by us;

Healing graciously granted us;

Faith shared wide among us;

Angel’s music heard by us; and

God’s high praises sung by us,

for now and for ever.

Adapted from an Irish Prayer

God of compassion,

be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation.

In their loneliness, be their consolation;

in their anxiety, be their hope;

in their darkness, be their light;

through him who suffered alone on the cross,

but reigns with you in glory,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Heavenly Father,
thank you that you have given us a spirit of power,
of courage,
of love
and a sound mind.
Help us to love as you love us,
and shine as lights to those around.

Lord our teacher, be gracious to your children we pray.
Strengthen us to fulfil the likeness of your image in us
and see your goodness and justice.
Give your grace to everyone who seeks to live in your peace,
and who sail the sea of the worlds troubles;
so that we may be made tranquil and supported by the Holy Spirit,
the unutterable Wisdom,
until the perfect day,
when we sing eternal thanks to the one only Father and Son,
Son and Father,
Teacher and Holy Spirit.   Amen

(After St. Clement)

Our Lord, God of everyone

we know that you are
Lord of heaven and earth, seas and rivers,
Lord of sun and moon, of all the stars,
Lord of high mountain and lowly valley,
Lord over heaven, and in heaven, and under heaven.

You inspire all things and quicken all things.
you are over all things and support all things.
you make the light of the sun to shine,
and surrounds the moon and the stars,
you gave a Son, eternal with yourself
and the Holy Spirit breathes in you;
the Trinity in whose dance of life we are invited to join.

Lord, be with us this day –
within us to purify us;
above us to draw us up;
beneath us to sustain us;
before us to lead us;
behind us to restrain us;
around us to protect us.

(After St Patrick c.389-461)

Lord, you are the God who is in heaven,
and you rule over all the nations.
Power and might are in your hands,
and no one can stand against you.
When calamity comes upon us,
we will stand in your presence,
cry out to you in our distress,
and you will hear us and save us.

(From 2 Chronicles 20: 6-9)

May God the Father bless us;
may Christ take care of us;
may the Holy Spirit enlighten us all the days of our life.
Lord be our defender and healer,
and keep our souls and bodies safe,
both now and for ever,
until Christ comes again.

(After Æthelwold c. 908-984)

O Lord, who has mercy on everyone,

kindle in us the fire of your Holy Spirit.

Take away from us our hearts of stone,

and give us living hearts,

hearts to love and adore you,

hearts to delight in you,

to follow and to worship you,

for Christ’s sake.

(After St Ambrose)

God our challenger and disturber,
help us to confront
all that makes for death and despair
in our lives, our communities, our world.
May we never lose sight
of the possibility of transformation
and be continually surprised
by people who believe in one another.

Heavenly Father,
Everything we want or need is known to you;
help us to grow in knowledge of you,
and to pray as your Spirit leads us.
We seek you always and pray that you will
heal and make us whole,
so that our hopes will be complete,
and our peace shall be perfect.

(After St Augustine)

Honour and praise to you, Lord God Almighty, most dear Father of heaven, for all the loving-kindness you have shown to us:

thanks be given to you for creating us after your own image;
thanks be given to you for redeeming us through the sacrifice of your dear Son;
thanks be given to you for sanctifying us with thine Holy Spirit
thanks be given to you for helping and succouring us in all our needs and necessities;
thanks be given for to you saving us from all dangers of body and soul;

O Lord, strengthen our faith; kindle it in our love towards you, and our neighbours

Guide us, so that we will always content with the work that you have given us. Bless all the efforts of our hands and the words of our lips so that they will always be helpful to others.

Lord, hold us by your merciful hand, that we may be kept safe amid all the challenge and turmoil of these difficult days.

Let your tender hand and outstretched arm, O Father, be our defence;

let the mercy and love of Jesus Christ, your dear Son, be our salvation;

let the grace and Holy Spirit be our comfort and consolation;

unto the end and in the end.

(After John Knox)

O God, whose blessed Son,
our great high priest,
has entered once for all into the Holy Place
and ever lives to intercede on our behalf:
grant that we,
sanctified by the offering of his body
may draw near with full assurance of faith
by the way which he has dedicated for us
and evermore serve you, the living God;
through the Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you,
O Father, and the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end.

(after Church of South India, Prayer for Ascension Day)
