Churches are often among the first places people turn to in times of crisis. Through trusted relationships, pastoral care and regular contact with families, church communities can be uniquely placed to recognise when someone may need additional support, including those affected by domestic abuse.
Churches in the Diocese of Oxford can make use of a new referral pathway to Bounce Back 4 Kids (BB4K), a therapeutic programme delivered by PACT for children and families who have experienced domestic abuse, that is currently free to access.
The programme supports children aged 3–11 and their non-abusive parent or carer, helping them process their experiences, rebuild confidence, strengthen family relationships and recover from the impact of abuse. Using a trauma-informed approach, BB4K provides a safe space where families can begin to heal and move forward.
Following an expansion as part of a national research trial, the programme is now available to families across Oxfordshire, Reading, West Berkshire and Wokingham, creating new opportunities for churches to connect families with specialist support.
Natausha van Vliet, CEO of PACT said: "Churches are places of welcome, care and trust. While churches may not be specialists in responding to domestic abuse, they are often in a position to notice when families are struggling and to walk alongside them with compassion.
"Having clear referral pathways to organisations like PACT means churches can play their part in helping people access the expert support they need. Churches are not only places of prayer and pastoral care, but also gateways to practical help and hope."
The Diocese is encouraging clergy, church officers and pastoral teams to familiarise themselves with the programme and consider whether families they know might benefit. Referrals can be made by professionals, while families can also refer themselves directly.
