Celebrating our retired clergy

Retired clergy from across Oxford Diocese gathered at Dorchester Abbey for fellowship and worship

Retired clergy from across the Diocese of Oxford gathered at Dorchester Abbey for an afternoon of fellowship, worship and thanks for all they continue to contribute to the life of the Church.

Around 70 retired clergy came together for afternoon tea in the Abbey before Evensong. Bishop Dave, Bishop of Buckingham, preached, with the Archdeacon of Dorchester, the Ven David Tyler, leading the prayers.

The event was an opportunity to recognise the significant contribution retired clergy continue to make across the diocese – through supporting worship and ministry in parishes, as well as through their prayer, experience and encouragement.

Each of the retired clergy attending was also given a gift of chocolates as a small token of thanks.

Bishop Dave said:

“It was a real joy to welcome so many of our retired clergy to Dorchester Abbey for afternoon tea and Evensong. Our retired clergy continue to contribute an enormous amount to the life and ministry of the diocese, often quietly and generously, and this was a small opportunity to say thank you.”

“Bishop Dave preaching at Dorchester Abbey to a congregation of retired diocesan clergyI’m deeply grateful for all that they continue to offer through their ministry, prayer, wisdom and support of our parishes.”

The calling of ordained ministry is lifelong, but how that ministry is lived out changes through different stages of life.

Retirement can be one of the most significant of those transitions, and retired clergy contribute to the life of the Church in many different ways. As a diocese, we thank God for the faithful and gifted service of all our retired clergy, however that service is offered.

Retired clergy representatives in each archdeaconry are also available to offer support and maintain links with retired clergy. Contact details for representatives across the diocese can be found on our PTO and retired clergy webpage.
