Oxford, August 4th, 2023 – The King has approved the appointment of the Revd Canon Peter Moger as Sub Dean of Christ, Church, Oxford.
Canon Moger joins Christ Church from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, where he was based in Stornoway and served as Episcopalian priest to the Isle from 2019. Before this he was Canon Residentiary and Precentor of York Minster from 2010, where he oversaw the Music Department and shared in the governance of the Minster. Canon Moger read Music at Merton College, Oxford, and has written several books on Church Music as well as acting as Secretary to the Liturgical Commission.
His appointment follows a public recruitment process. It was recommended to the King by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Canon Moger succeeds Revd Richard Peers, who has taken up the post of Dean of Llandaff Cathedral.
The Very Revd Prof Sarah Foot, Dean of Christ Church, said: "I am delighted to welcome Peter to Christ Church. He has significant experience in Cathedral ministry, particularly in music and the day-to-day running of a Cathedral, having worked at Ely and York Cathedrals, where he was Precentor and Acting Dean. I’m greatly looking forward to working with him.”
The Sub Dean oversees the life and worship of Christ Church Cathedral. As a key member of the Cathedral’s Chapter, the Sub Dean has delegated responsibility from the Dean for day-to-day management of the Cathedral and Canon Moger will serve as Vice Chair of the Cathedral School.

- Revd Canon Moger was asked to become Sub Dean by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak MP. The Prime Minister recommends appointees to the Deanship and Sub Deanship of Christ Church to the King. His recommendation to the King follows the conclusion of a thorough, publicly advertised recruitment process.
- Christ Church comprises both the Cathedral of the Diocese of Oxford and a constituent college of the University of Oxford.
- Revd Canon Moger will be installed in Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday 7 October.
