Safeguarding Training

Safeguarding Training

The Diocese of Oxford is working towards creating a church which is safer for everyone.  Active engagement with safeguarding training supports all those who have a role within the Church to effectively recognise and respond to possible abuse and implement best safeguarding practice.  Safeguarding is everybody’s responsibility.

The Church of England’s Practice Guidance: Safeguarding Training and Development, published in Jan 2017, provides a clear framework for safeguarding training across all Church of England communities.  A range of Core safeguarding training modules are a mandatory requirement for particular Church roles.  Safeguarding training should be refreshed every 3 years.

2018 Safeguarding Training Programme

Please find below the 2018 Safeguarding Training Programme.  To book a training place please click on the Eventbrite Booking Link, within the programme, to register for an Eventbrite ticket.

Training sessions are being delivered at additional locations in 2018, alongside Church House Oxford. They include St. Michael’s Church Tilehurst and The Church of Christ the Cornerstone in Milton Keynes.  Further venue information can be found through the Eventbrite booking link for the session.

Core Training Modules

C3 Safeguarding Training – Clergy & Lay Ministers

Our C3 safeguarding training session equips incumbents, licensed and authorised ministers to embed healthy safeguarding practices across their parishes and to respond well to safeguarding situations.

Throughout the day we will explore what safeguarding means for us within our church context, including:

  • The Church’s Mission
  • The Church context
  • Who we are safeguarding
  • What we are safeguarding against
  • How we safeguard
  • Who can help

C3S1 safeguarding training sessions combine C3 with the Specialist S1 Safer Recruitment module.  There is an additional focus on good practice, guidance and legislation to ensure safer recruitment.  The attendance of C3S1 is essential for specific roles, as detailed in the table below, and then should be attended for others who are involved in recruitment within the Church.

Which module should I attend?

Clergy and Lay Ministers Essential Modules
Incumbents, House for Duty C3S1
LLMs C3 & S1 if relevant to role
SSMs C3 & S1 if relevant to role
PtO C3 & S1 if relevant to role
Chaplains C3 & S1 if relevant to role

C2S1 Safeguarding Training with Safer Recruitment – Leadership

Our C2S1 safeguarding training session equips parish officers to embed healthy parish safeguarding practices.  During the session those with safeguarding leadership responsibilities, and those who lead activities with children, young people and vulnerable adults, will explore their roles in implementing parish safeguarding procedures and responding to serious situations.

The S1 Safer Recruitment section explores good practice, guidance and legislation to ensure safer recruitment.  Participants are supported to become more familiar with House of Bishops’ safer recruitment practice guidance.

The S1 session follows on from the C2 Leadership Module.  S1 can be booked separately, where C2 is not the relevant safeguarding training module.  For example, if an individual only undertakes the role of a Recruiter / Verifier for their parish.

For the roles where S1 is stated, it is essential that they attend.  Where S1 is not stated, roles are required to attend if they are involved with recruitment within the Diocese.

Which module should I attend?

Parish Safeguarding Officer C2S1
Church Warden C2
PCC Safeguarding Lead C2

C1 Safeguarding Training – Foundation

Module C1 situates safeguarding in the context of the Church and equips participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively recognise and respond to possible abuse.  The safeguarding of both children and vulnerable adults is considered during the session.

This training module is required for anyone who has safeguarding responsibilities or who has contact with children or adults who may be vulnerable through their role within the Church.

A team of volunteer safeguarding trainers are able to deliver the 2 hour C1 safeguarding training session at your parish.  This has replaced the previous Parish Safeguarding Training.  For more information please contact Rebecca Norris-Bulpitt – Safeguarding Assistant & Training Officer (rebecca.norris-bulpitt@oxford.anglican.org).

Safeguarding E-Learning – Online Training

Two safeguarding training modules are now available through the Church of England Safeguarding Training Portal, to complete online.

The C0 Basic Awareness e-learning module is recommended for anyone who needs a basic level of safeguarding awareness.  Participants completing other core modules will be asked to complete the C0 e-learning in preparation. This module details the different types of abuse for children and vulnerable adults and the possible indicators of these.

The C1 Foundation e-learning module can be completed by those who are unable to attend the C1 face-to-face sessions being held across parishes.  Although face-to-face sessions are our preferred method of training, allowing participants to learn from the trainers and group discussion, the online learning should overcome the challenges of attending face-to-face sessions.

To access the e-learning go to the Church of England Safeguarding Training Portal.

  • Select Online Courses & Module that you will be completing.
  • Create an account.  Please detail which parish you attend and that this is part of the Diocese of Oxford so that the information can be included in our training report.  For Training Institution please select ‘Not part of a Training Institution.’  It can take 24 hours to receive your log-in information.

We recommend that if under 16s are completing the e-learning they do so within a group, or with an adult at home, so that they can access support straight away if they find some of the content challenging.
