Get to know us a bit better

The EcoHub is part of the Diocese of Oxford’s common vision for a greener future. We have a lot going on to help us reach our goals – have a look below to find out more.

The Diocese

The Diocese of Oxford is the administrative area of the Church of England that, broadly speaking, covers the three counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. You can find out more on our About Us page.

As Christians, we’re called to care for God’s creation, and the climate issues facing our planet are hugely important to us. You can watch a series of videos from Bishop Olivia on why we should care for creation at all levels in the Church.

In March 2020, Diocesan Synod called a climate emergency and committed to a wide-ranging plan of practical action, prayer and advocacy, including a move towards a net-zero target by 2035.

As one of the most pressing issues of our age, environmental action is part of our common vision as a Diocese.

So far, more than 80 of our churches have registered for the Eco Church programme, and over 250 have submitted their energy footprint data. We’re also investing over £200,000 over the next seven years on a carbon footprint reduction programme across our church buildings.

You’ll find more on our commitments and work so far in the Diocesan Synod paper.

Bishop Steven also regularly speaks in the House of Lords on the issue.

The Programme

The Environment Action Programme (EAP) is a key focus area for the Diocese and a major component of our common vision for a more Christ-like Church. The programme is designed to focus the whole Diocese on achieving our environmental commitments and being a voice for climate justice.

The EAP is overseen by an Environment Task Group (ETG), chaired by the Bishop of Reading, and managed by the Diocesan Environment Team.

The programme has two main goals;

  1. A net zero target goal, focused on achieving the net zero target for church buildings, clergy housing and church schools; and
  2. A collective change goal, focused on transforming our response to the climate emergency.
