In the Diocese of Oxford Readers are known as Licensed Lay Ministers. Readers are lay people in the Church of England from all walks of life who are called by God, theologically trained and licensed by the Church to preach, teach, lead worship and assist in pastoral, evangelistic and liturgical work.

Bishop Andrew

Welcome to the LLM section of the Diocesan website.
Christian ministry is not the preserve of a privileged few, but the natural outflow of our life together as the Church, through the many. In this diocese, LLMs play an important role in helping us all model that together. Currently, we have around 300 LLMs in the Diocese who share in the ministry of the church, through parishes and chaplaincies and in the workplace.
I became Warden of Licensed Lay Ministers in the autumn of 2015; a role I share with my colleague, the Revd. Dr. Phillip Tovey, who is the Deputy Warden. Our work is supported by an outstanding team of volunteer Archdeaconry Advisers, all LLMs, who are here, like us, to support you in ministry, for the flourishing of the whole.
These web pages provide you with some of the information that you will need to minister here as an LLM. You will also find here information about vocation; selection, and training; and a little more about the various people who help support Licensed Lay Ministry in the Diocese.
Three key activities for the LLM community are the Forum which happens on a Saturday early in the year, an annual Conference which takes place in the summer, and the Annual Service for the licensing of new ministers and the renewing of ministerial commitment, which takes place in Christchurch Cathedral in the autumn. This year, of course, is the 150th anniversary of LLM ministry in the Church of England and so is a very special year of celebration for us. If you are already an LLM, you will receive information about these activities and we look forward to seeing you there.
I pray that God may make you fruitful in your ministry, that you may be a blessing to many.
