Background to the Post

St Laurence is an Anglican Church with young people at its heart located in the centre of Reading. For the last 16 years we have given ourselves to the vision of living to see young people come to faith and build new forms of Church with them. We are now at a vital stage of change and development and there is a need for a Girls Worker to come and join the team. St Laurence has just been through a thorough review process as we continue to explore our calling. During this process, there has been a discernment by the whole church of four key priorities which we have committed to. These will be lived out across every aspect of church life.

These are:

  1. We commit to being the inclusive family of Jesus Christwhere lives are transformed by love
  2. We commit to create spaces where people meet Jesus Christ and thrive as disciples
  3. We commit to love and serve young people in Reading and with them to love and serve others
  4. We commit to share what we learn so that the wider church may be effective in mission with young people

Purpose of the role

As a multi-generational church with a specific vocation to young people, we seek to employ staff to enable and facilitate the ministry of the whole community. There is a vacancy for the key role of Girls Worker, working as part of the team with the Youth Work Director, the Pastoral and Safeguarding Lead, the Youth Team,  the Vicar, Associate Vicar, PCC and all members of the community to greater serve and enable our vision.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual, exceptionally gifted in working with young people and teenage girls in particular, motivated to see the good news of Jesus transform young lives. The post-holder will be able to throw themselves into this community dedicated to building church with these young people, taking particular responsibility for the female young people with whom we regularly engage, many of whom have particular needs.

We would particularly welcome female applicants for this post to address the existing gender imbalance of our workforce. An Enhanced DBS disclosure is required for this post.
