Ofsted’s current 14 criteria for governance raise significant new and refined challenges. That number increased from 9 to 14, and the next framework (in development now) is not expected to, in any way, reduce the relentless focus on governance.
New aspects include reference to the agenda which has become known as ‘British values’; an explicit requirement for a very active transparency towards stakeholders; an expectation that governors do not confine their influence to within the school grounds; and an expectation that Governors regularly review whether they are in fact hindering the school’s progress by their lack of expertise and knowledge. The Governors Handbook (January 2015) identifies that ‘High quality induction and continuing professional development is vital to equip governors with the skills they need…’
Becoming an Effective Governor examines the key roles and responsibilities for Governors within a Church School setting. Using presentation and discussion it provides:
- Opportunities for Governors to explore their understanding.
- The balance of support and challenge required for senior leaders.
- The key questions to ask.
- What, using national research, effective governance looks like in our schools today.
This module is a priority for all recently appointed governors and to enable all Governors to remain up to date with the current educational landscape.
