Director of Music, St Andrew, Sonning


We are seeking a Director of Music at an exciting time in the musical life of our ancient Thames-side church. Founded in the 7th century by St Birinus, it was a pro-cathedral church for the Bishops of Ramsbury and Sonning. St Andrew’s is at the centre of a small beautiful village that attracts many worshippers and visitors from surrounding areas, and it is a significant venue for weddings.

The PCC has fully committed to creating a Choral Foundation, which is ready to launch with £50,000 upfront funding, a choir centre with a rehearsal room, choir vestry, kitchen and WCs. In 2020, a bespoke Viscount Regent Classic Three manual organ was installed in addition to maintaining our Victorian pipe organ.

Our robed adult choir sing at Sunday Eucharists and the robed junior choir join them for two Sundays a month. Choral Evensong, held once a month, is followed by a tea in our Ark complex.

The Director of Music will:

  • Recruit choir members utilising established close links with our two church primary schools, a large church secondary school and the Reading Blue Coat School, which is situated next to our church;
  • Lead choirs in rehearsals and services;
  • Be a proficient organist;
  • Administer the choral scholarships;
  • Be responsible for our organ scholar;
  • Need to be enthusiastic about taking our church music to the next level;
  • Have strong inter-personal and communication skills.

The salary is in the range of £10,000 – £12,000, depending on experience, and an average (in normal times) of between £4,000 – £5,000 p/a in occasional office fees. The successful candidate will have use of our organs and an excellent Kawai concert grand piano for private tuition.
