Chaplaincy Team Leader, Wantage Deanery Schools

Three-year post in the first instance, with possibility of becoming permanent

Salary range: £27- 30k

Starting date: September 1 2021

Wantage Deanery (a group of 16 Church of England churches in south Oxfordshire) are seeking to appoint a creative person to this new and exciting pioneer role. Initially based in two of our primary schools, you will lead a developing chaplaincy team that will ultimately include all the deanery schools: 13 primaries, one secondary, and one all-through school (nursery to sixth form).

The role involves co-ordinating volunteers and employed staff to provide Christian spiritual and pastoral care for pupils, staff and parents, connecting churches, communities and schools together using a variety of strategies.

This is a collaborative venture between the Vale Academy Trust and Wantage Deanery, supported by the community of St Mary the Virgin in Wantage and the diocesan chaplaincy advisor. It is an opportunity to pilot a specifically contemplative style of chaplaincy, building on the work done by existing volunteers and nurturing links between schools/churches and community.

You will need to be a person of lively and authentic Christian faith, someone who can communicate timeless Christian truths in new and fresh ways and who relates well to young people.

This position is open to both lay and ordained candidates, and the postholder does not necessarily have to be affiliated to the Church of England, though an appreciation of this tradition would, of course, be important.

Closing date: 12pm Monday 17 May

Interview date: Friday 21 May
