Greyfriars Church, Reading, is recruiting two full-time managers.

Originally built in 1311, Greyfriars is a large church in the centre of Reading with a vision to “see Reading transformed by the love and power of Jesus.” As part of that vision, the church is undertaking a redevelopment of the site to provide a modern, welcoming space, to include a coffee shop and a bookshop. Greyfriars is now looking for two managers to help finalise the plans to see the Atrium bookshop and coffee shops become a reality. As the bookshop will be the only Christian bookshop in the town, the goal is to develop it into a thriving operation and key resource for Reading and the surrounding area.

This is an exciting opportunity to get involved with a committed team and a new project from the ground up.

The managers will be responsible for developing and managing the ministry of the Atrium bookshop and coffee shop at Greyfriars in support of the vision and mission of the church. The role involves day-to-day operational management, including selection and ordering of stock and materials, maintenance of the websites and supervision and management of staffing to ensure high standards of customer service. They will develop the operating plans to help deliver the strategy for the Atrium to ensure that customers experience a warm, friendly and distinctively Christian service, and that the customer experiences are attractive and relevant to a wide range of customers from inside and outside the church community.

What we are looking for:

Enthusiastic and motivated team leaders who will establish and foster effective relationships with a wide and diverse range of internal and external customers. The managers will be able to contribute and deploy new ideas and programmes to develop the work of the Atrium and will possess proven commercial judgment and be committed to building and developing a host of customer bases. They will also be dedicated to working creatively and determinedly to maximise sales opportunities and provide excellent customer service.

What you will need:

• Relevant experience (bookshop or coffee shop depending on role applied for), commercial judgment and excellent interpersonal skills
• Ability to deal positively and resiliently with a range of diverse customers and situations
• Working knowledge of Food Hygiene regulations and good practice and a current Basic Food Hygiene Certificate
• High level of numerical and both written and verbal communication skills
• Sound knowledge of sales and marketing within the Christian book and gift environment
• Good level of education including Grade C or better in GCSE Maths (or equivalent)
• Proven experience of cash handling and maximising sales
• High level of computer-literacy: strong MS Office skills (Excel, Word and Outlook)
• Ability to create a business plan and forecasts for trading

This is an exciting opportunity to join and shape Greyfriars Church, a growing resource church with a vision to “see Reading transformed by the love and power of Jesus”. Greyfriars is a vibrant church in the centre of Reading that is looking for someone to come and join our existing team to support the mission and ministry of the church. The appointment of a new associate vicar represents a significant transition for Greyfriars, as the church grows in its role as a resourcing hub in the Diocese of Oxford.

The associate vicar will be a key member of a dynamic staff team, with a specific role to help pastor and disciple the congregation and to help oversee the staff team. We expect this would be a suitable post for someone after their curacy but we are open to people at different stages of their ministry.

First and foremost, we are seeking someone who loves Jesus, loves people and who is called to this role. This means someone who:

  • has a mature Christian faith and Godly character
  • is a team player and brings cohesion in a team environment
  • has a desire to make disciples and pastor the flock
  • is a gifted preacher and teacher
  • is able to lead from the second chair
  • is able to build links with and develop our key lay leaders
  • is an experienced line manager.
