As carrots are laid out for his reindeer and last minute letters are written to the man himself, the age of innocence seems suddenly very close. In all the commercialisation the benevolent figure of Father Christmas is a reminder of the real meaning of Christmas. He himself sees the Christmas of today as a holding operation. For some children it is their only glimpse of the goodness of God. 'Keep it alive and one day some of the kids might ask why we celebrate it' he says.
