Reading’s Good Friday United Act of Witness

Date Added: Tuesday 1st May 2007
Reading’s Good Friday United Act of Witness
The Procession of Witness, led by the Bishop of Reading and other Church Leaders, leaves the Forbury Gardens.

More than a thousand Christians drawn from the whole spectrum of the Church walked through Reading on Good Friday in an act of witness as part of the Regenerate mission initiative.  Led by the Bishop of Reading, the Rt Revd Stephen Cottrell, Pastor Yinka Oyekan of the Reading Community Church and other Church Leaders the Procession, conspicuous by many wearing red clothing and a crucifix, made its way from the Forbury Gardens through the town centre to the Minster Church of St Mary’s.  Shoppers were handed leaflets describing the significance of Good Friday.

The walk paused outside Marks and Spencer where Steve Murray, of Behold Mime Ministry, movingly and graphically enacted some of the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion.  Finally Bishop Stephen conducted a short service in St Mary’s Churchyard.  There he proclaimed the message of God’s love and hope for every person that Regenerate seeks to share with the people of Reading.

The Procession of Witness moves through Broad Street under the watchful eye of BBC TV.

Bishop Stephen and Church Leaders lead the singing of “When I survey the wondrous cross”.
