100 Not Out for St Andrew's Church

Date Added: Thursday 5th July 2007

Cricket MatchSt Andrew's Church in Oxford celebrated its centenary this summer with a hard fought cricket match between members of the congregation and the rest of the world.

The home team, led by the vicar the Revd Andrew Wingfield Digby - a former county cricketer and chaplain to the England team - lost by just three runs.

The day was also a great community occasion, with more than 1,000 people attending. At the church's morning service the guest speaker was a former vicar of the parish, now the Bishop of Coventry Colin Bennetts.

He recalled that during his time, there were still members of the congregation alive who remembered the laying of the foundation stone.

The Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Revd John Pritchard, preached at the evening service in one of his first parish visits following his inauguration.

He encouraged the church to look to the next century as an opportunity for growth.
