Published under the Alpha umbrella, Café Theology is aimed at those who want to explore Christian faith or grow in it by deepening their understanding of key theological subjects. It is written in an accessible and creative style which remains rooted in practical application and draws heavily on the author's wide theological reading, from which he quotes extensively, and his often quirky sense of humour and anecdotes.
For those with an already mature faith the book lends itself as material for use in home groups or as a reference work to lend out to those looking for a user-friendly introduction to a topic. Each chapter ends with a helpful list of resources for further study.
In a post-modern age which demands authenticity of lifestyle as proof of beliefs that work this book is a timely and provocative call to the Church to “walk the talk”. Far from being the light-weight read which the title might suggest, Café Theology is less like a frothy cappuccino or weak latte and much more like a strong shot of espresso- it is probably best read in small doses and savoured for its stimulating effect.
