Baby Bible

Date Added: Friday 17th February 2006

Adapting the Bible for children, let alone babies, is no easy task but Oxford author Sarah Toulmin has done just that.

Her new Baby Bible, published by Lion at £9.99, is designed to appeal to those looking for a christening or dedication present.  Lion have even created special editions  with this in mind - a Baby Boy Bible and a Baby Girl Bible, with padded covers and gilt edges. There are some nice illustrations, and attempts to make this genuinely appealing to babies and toddlers, rather than just a simplistic rewrite.

We liked the sound effect text - the splishes, splashes and hiccups - in The Big Fish (Jonah and the Whale) and elsewhere.

As bookshelves of Christian bookshops are crammed full of Bibles for Children, it will be no easy task to make another adaptation stand out, but Sarah Toulmin has made a good attempt.

Rebecca Paveley, Editor of The DOOR, currently on maternity leave. Noah is her elder son,
aged two.
