Amid the witch and wizard mania that is Harry Potter this summer an altogether more angelic option for young readers is also winging its way to our bookshops, courtesy of local reverend and author Lynda Rose.
Assignment Earth is Lynda’s first book for children (though she is a seasoned writer of adult novels) and evolved from stories for her own daughter Christabel who wanted excitement and adventure before bed but above all… angels.
Enter Raffie – an enthusiastic but naive trainee angel with a tendency to rush in where more cautious angels fear to tread - and we’re off on a fast-moving fantasy struggle of good v evil as she is unwittingly drawn into a dangerous battle for cosmic control.
Above all this is an adventure story, Lynda told the DOOR, with a broad appeal to fantasy loving children.
But she says she would be delighted if the book opened any eyes to the real wonders of the world and how precious every life is, as well as the fact that around us there are always good and bad influences – even among angels!
Find out more about Lynda’s faith, work, and thoughts on children’s literature in a full interview in the next issue of the DOOR, out Sunday 26 August.
Five lucky children could also pick up a free copy of Assignment Earth, aimed at age 9 – 12 year olds, thanks to Lion Children’s Publishing.
Simply email your name, address and age to door@oxford.anglican.org headed ‘Angel delight’ or send your details to the DOOR, Diocesan Church House, North Hinksey Lane, Oxford, OX2 ONB, Winners will be picked from a hat on 14 September.
