Join Berinsfield for festival of childhood

Date Added: Wednesday 3rd May 2006

Link, share, celebrate! That’s the message for Berinsfield and beyond from the organisers of the community’s first Festival of Childhood.

The week long celebrations run from 1-7 May and were borne of an idea that started as a conversation in the local doctor’s surgery between Berinsfield’s Vicar, the Revd Sandra Millar, and a local health visitor.

Sandra says: ‘We hear so much about what’s wrong with  children and young families today and yet there are so many positive things going on. We wanted to celebrate the good things about young people and families and encourage them in their sometimes difficult roles.’

The celebrations have official backing of the Department of Health and support from other local community agencies such as Soha Housing which is sponsoring ‘Child of our community’ awards and invites nominations from the community for good examples of ‘the best of our children’.

The awards will be presented at one of the main events of the week - ‘Deal or No Deal: children’s lives today and tomorrow’ on Thursday 4 May at 7-7.30pm. This is a unique chance for adults and children to ask questions of those who make the plans and policies for young people.

A whole host of other activities aim to mix practical advice and information sessions  on bullying, self esteem and health, with music, sports, fashion, storytelling and play opportunities.

Sandra says: ‘It has been an ambitious project which has brought together a wide range of people across the village and beyond and has been done on a wing and a prayer with no money but lots of enthusiasm. It is a  significant achievement for the community and I can’t wait for the fun to begin.’
