Record exam results for academies

The Oxford Academy has seen 63 per cent of its pupils achieve five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C, with 32 per cent achieving five or more at A* to C including English and maths. The former Peers School became the first academy sponsored by the diocese when it opened its doors to pupils in September 2008. The last year of Peers School saw results improve from 11 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades, including maths and English, to 18 per cent. It also saw the number of pupils achieving five grade A* to C GCSEs increase to 38 per cent.

In 2009 classes started at our second academy, Aylesbury Vale, where pupils are also enjoying better grades. The number of pupils achieving five GCSEs at grades A* to C has increased from 53 per in 2009 cent to 73 per cent in 2010. The number of pupils with five GCSEs at A* to C including English and maths has increased by four per cent.
Leslie Stephen, Diocesan Director of Education, said: "We are delighted with the successful GCSE results at both academies. The staff and pupils have worked extremely hard to make this happen and we are extremely pleased to see them do so well."

Mike Reading, Principal of the Oxford Academy, said: “We have not only improved; we have blown away previous achievements.
“Overall, our results are better than many anticipated and exceed the data predictions that we have been given. Our own target for this year has been exceeded. The headline figure of 32% is three times the score of three years ago. More and more students are experiencing the thrill of success.”

Jonathan Johnson, Principal of the Aylesbury  Vale Academy, said: “Tribute should be paid to the staff and the students who have worked hard through two years where one school has closed and another has opened, presenting many challenges!”

“We are thrilled with a continued improvement in student performance and this again represents a measured step on the road to sustainable improvement. The church’s involvement can clearly be seen in the way our students have applied themselves to their studies and to helping one another when called upon. We currently have 50 applications to our sixth form meaning it will have gone from 0 to 100 in two years and again I attribute this to the ethos and values that the Church has brought in sponsoring an Academy that allows students to feel this is a place where they can grow and develop spiritually as well as academically.”
