Where do we begin? - How to 'do'Fairtrade in your church

1. Use Fairtrade tea and coffee . . .

Did you know that CafeDirect is the 6th largest brand of ground coffee in the UK? That all the Co-op's own brand coffee is Fairtrade? That Fairtrade coffee overall has an 18% share of the roast and ground coffee market?

No longer hard to find, Fairtrade coffee and tea is available in most supermarkets and in many independent food stores . . . not to mention all general Oxfam shops, dedicated Fairtrade shops, and Traidcraft stalls – many of which can also order 'catering-size'packages of tea and coffee.

Look for the logo  on the package . . .

Common brands of coffee include CaféDirect, Clipper (some lines) all Co-op 'own-brand'coffees,Equal ExchangePercol (some lines),  andTraidcraft . Sainsbury's, Somerfield and Tesco now have some Fairtrade 'own-brands'too!

Common tea brands includeClipper (some lines),Equal Exchange ,Hampstead ,Traidcraft and Tea Direct – as well as an 'own-brand'line each from Sainsbury's and Somerfield.

2. Try something new . . .

Fancy some Fairtrade pasta?
Traidcraft do it! (avail. Traidcraft and Oxfam shops)
Fairtrade jam?
Try Traidcraft (as above) and Duerr's (avail. at Tesco) !

Ginger fans sing the praises of Traidcraft's crystallised ginger biscuits, and the Village Bakery's Fairtrade Christmas cake (avail. Oxfam and Traidcraft) is delicious.

Overall, there are numerous Fairtrade product lines . . . sugar (Traidcraft and Co-op), biscuits (Traidcraft, Co-op and Tesco), Geobars, dried fruits and nuts (Traidcraft, Oxfam & independent shops) . . . even roses! (avail. Tesco)

3. Introduce someone to Fairtrade . . .

You could bring along a tin of Fairtrade coffee to work. Or ask for Fairtrade products at a local shop (Londis now can supply Fairtrade to their retailers). You could even  make up 'request forms'that other people can hand in to request products! Some churches run Fairtrade tasting stalls at local shops. Others join up with other area churches to run joint Traidcraft stalls or hold local events.
