Joan Biggs has seen many changes in her 60 years as a Sunday School teacher at All Saints Church, Wokingham.
She remembers when children sat at old-style school desks and were told bible stories and when children only attended church for ‘special occasions’. She also remembers taking five coach-loads of children on the annual Sunday School summer outing to a seaside resort.
She began teaching in the Sunday School when she was just a teenager. ‘Many of the children I taught are now parents and grandparents’, Joan says.
The congregation of All Saints recognised Joan’s enormous contribution in a Junior Church Thanksgiving Service, where a special presentation was made (pictured below). ‘Many things have changed for the better’, Joan says. ‘Children now take a more active part in church services and no longer have to be seen and not heard!’
