Arms of the Diocese

696 x 1294 JPG

Description

Curiosity is sometimes expressed about the coat of arms of the diocese, which is unusual. The full blazon is: "Sable, a fess argent, between in chief three ladies, couped at the breasts, vested argent and crowned or and in base an ox argent, armed or, passing over a ford barry wavy argent and azure." The lower part of the shield indubitably reflects that of the City. It has been suggested that the female heads represent St Frideswide and her patrons St Cecilia and St Catherine. One author has conjectured that they may originally have been male heads, representing the royal founders of the University, but there seems to be no positive evidence for this.

The story that Bishop Strong once described the shield as---Threelady dons viva-ing a cow" is probably apocryphal. The arms are not official.
