Cathedral Sub-Dean to Retire

The Very Reverend Nicholas Coulton, Sub-Dean and Canon Residentiary of Christ Church Oxford, is to retire on 30 November 2008. He has been Sub-Dean of Christ Church Cathedral since January 2003. He was Provost and latterly Dean of Newcastle from 1990 to 2003.

A former solicitor in Bristol, he was ordained in 1967. From 1971-1975 he was chaplain to Robert Runcie (later Archbishop of Canterbury) when the latter was Bishop of St Albans. He was Vicar of St Paul’s, Bedford church from 1975 to 1990, and also at that time a part-time Industrial Chaplain in a foundry firm.

At Newcastle he chaired the North East Council of Christians and Jews and represented the Faith Communities on the North East Regional Assembly. He was a Director of the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group 1997-2005.

He is a member of the CofE Legal Advisory Commission, and also a Governor of Ripon College Cuddesdon. He leads a small voluntary group representing the Churches in discussion with the Home Office and Ministry of Justice with regard to asylum issues, and will continue to do so in retirement. He is an Officer Brother of the Order of St John.

Nicholas Coulton, who will be 68 when he retires, will continue to live in Oxford with his wife Edith. He looks forward to more time for gardening, reading, art and music appreciation, travel and sleep.
