March of the abolitionists

Date Added: Thursday 22nd March 2007

Lifeline Expedition is organising a long walk called the March of the Abolitionists to take place alongside the series of events organised by Churches Together under the banner of  “set all free”.

A spur walk will link Oxford with the route of the March at Reading; a distance of approximately thirty miles. The Walk for Freedom will set off on the afternoon of June 3rd and reach Reading on the 5th, and walkers are encouraged to continue to Newbury the following day. The group will be looking for simple overnight accommodation in Abingdon and Wallingford, possibly connecting with churches or other interested groups.

It will be an opportunity to reflect together on the ongoing legacy of the Atlantic slave trade, as well as celebrating the witness of those whose efforts brought it to an end, and to pray for healing and reconciliation. We will remember people affected by modern day forms of slavery, and hopefully raise funds to support Stand Up For Africa , or other organisations working to fight trafficking and exploitation. Catherine House, author of “Voices Against Slavery”, will be sharing some stories and meditations with us.

The group would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to participate in this walk, including folk with roots in other countries affected by the slave trade. Participants should be physically fit, but needn’t be seasoned walkers. If you are able to offer accommodation, or have information about any part that Oxford and its surrounding area played in the drama of slavery and abolition, your help would also be appreciated.
