Terry feels the heat for cancer fund

Date Added: Tuesday 27th February 2007

The Revd Terry Smith of St Swithun’s Church, Kennington, will jet off this month from the cold English weather to the heat of Morocco.

But this will be no holiday for Mr Smith as he will be taking part in the Marathon des Sables - the toughest footrace on earth. And at 68 years old he will be the oldest Brit in the race!

In temperatures as high as 120 degrees fahrenheit he will run and walk over 151 miles of uneven, rocky ground and sand dunes for six days, carrying his sleeping bag, food, clothes, medical kit and more in a back pack.

Asked why he is taking part he says: ‘As T.S.Elliot says, “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go’.

‘I also want to be able to identify more with what Jesus went through in the wilderness,  and to find out more about suffering, as it is at the heart of the Christian faith and I’m not altogether sure how that works.’

His own suffering in the race will help others as Mr Smith is raising money for the Kennington Cancer Fund.

There’s still time to sponsor him by emailing Ter.s@btinternet.com or calling for more information on 01865 735135.
