In a social context of increasing inequality – the gap between rich and poor is growing – poverty takes many forms. There is poverty of resources (especially financial); poverty of relationship (social isolation), and poverty of identity (leading to low self esteem and lack of a sense of meaning to life).
In areas of population density – urban areas – the challenges of poverty can be especially great – and the opportunities for Christian congregations in those areas to respond to need can be especially rewarding.
The Urban Priority Action Group of the Diocese of Oxford (UPAG) runs regular forums for those working in urban areas, to exchange ideas, good practice and support. All who are interested in urban mission and ministry are welcome to contribute to this network.
