One of Oxford's Muslim leaders visited the Diocesan Synod on 15 November 2014 to assure the Church that mainstream Muslims were making every effort to counter the beliefs and practices of Islamic State. Imam Monawar Hussain, who is a Muslim Tutor at Eton College and the Founder of The Oxford Foundation, set out a vision of 'mainstream Islam'. In particular, he drew the synod's attention to an Open Letter to Dr Ibrahim Awwad Al-Badri, (also known as Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi) and to the Fighters and Followers of 'Islamic State' in which he argues against the recent behaviour and propaganda of extremist Muslims. The Open Letter is signed by 126 prominent Muslims from around the world, and is being sent to mosques, schools, colleges and universities.

"It is vital that we get to the grassroots," he told the synod. Download Imam Monawar Hussain's presentation: Monawar Hussain 15 Nov14 . ;
