When a major incident such as a rail crash or disaster occurs, the Church’s immediate response is through the clergy emergency response team drawn from all denominations.
This team works with the emergency services, local authority and emergency voluntary agencies to direct and co-ordinate all clergy offering spiritual care and support to distressed survivors, relatives and operational staff:
- at the scene of the incident where access is strictly controlled by the police
- at rest centres, eg church halls, survivor reception centres, friends’ and relatives’ centres, refreshment areas, and temporary mortuaries.
Note: The Churches’ response at the receiving hospitals is directed by the hospital chaplaincy.
